Romaine announces open space acquisition in Wading River
Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine announced on October 29 the successful closing and acquisition of approximately 6.3 acres of wooded open space in the hamlet of Wading River, Town of Riverhead, through the Suffolk County Drinking Water Protection Program. The property is located south of Route 25A and west of Wading River Manor Road in Wading River.
“This acquisition is another important step in Suffolk County’s ongoing commitment to preserving environmentally sensitive lands and protecting our drinking water resources,” said County Executive Ed Romaine. “By preserving this wooded property, we are protecting valuable open space and helping to safeguard our groundwater resources for future generations.”
The property is located within a Special Groundwater Protection Area (SGPA), making its preservation particularly important to the protection of Suffolk County’s drinking water supply. The acquisition will help maintain the property’s natural character while protecting environmentally sensitive land from future development.
The total acquisition cost for the property was $4.4 million.
The property was acquired through the Suffolk County Drinking Water Protection Program and will be preserved as open space for passive recreational use and environmental protection.
“This acquisition reinforces our commitment to protecting Suffolk County’s natural resources while preserving open space for the benefit of our residents,” Romaine said.
